In these times, it bodes well to reflect on what makes a great leader.
New America Fellow Jeff Eggers partnered with General Stanley McChrystal and Jay Mangone to explore how we typically define leadership by looking at thirteen historic leaders. The result is a book, “Leaders: Myth and Reality”.
Among the leaders profiled is Robert E. Lee (McChrystal’s idol) who on paper was considered the ideal leader but ultimately failed to lead his side to victory. Exploring Lee’s life and leadership style, McChrystal explains how Lee’s decisions and ultimate downfall helped him to rethink his strategies.
Albert Einstein and Leonard Bernstein, reformers Martin Luther and Martin Luther King, Jr., and heroes Harriet Tubman and Zheng He are also profiled.
New America is holding an event around this topic at their offices in Washington DC on October 31st at 12:15-1:45. It will also be webcast if you are not in the area.
