Yesterday, a 5 year partnership was launched in Puerto Rico to revitalize the coffee industry there. The group is called the “Avengers of Coffee” by Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda who is a part of the effort. The program is designed to make the coffee industry, which was destroyed by Hurricane Maria last year, better than ever.
According to the Miami Herald the “Avengers” are The Hispanic Federation and Nespresso who have each has donated $1 million. Starbucks has contributed $475,000 and 2 million climate resistant seeds and the Rockefeller Foundation has donated $500,000.
TechnoServe will lead implementation through training thousands of coffee farmers as well as helping them obtain access to supplies, financing and markets.
“This is an approach that means business – working directly with farmers and across sectors to restore so many livelihoods devastated by the hurricane,” William Warshauer, President and CEO of TechnoServe has said.
